Recapping on our last tutorial

So far we have discussed some views (different and conflicting views at times) on what “reality” is, for example the reality of an architectural firm, or reality for shanty town dwellers. Within this discussion some important topics have been put forward by you, such as: what represent a problem in design studio, whether design is ‘always’ about problem solving and whether art can also aim to solve a problem. Another issue was that of relevance, are there problems that are more relevant than others, and relevant for whom or to what end. The notions of constrains and material reality have also been mentioned as important.

The exercise yesterday aimed to identify those issues. Are these problems sufficiently defined in the document? How are they expressed? Are there problems that are more relevant than others (for example by comparing the 2 exercises), what criteria do you use to assess their relevance? How do you know that the problem is addressing real needs? Is there a need in the first place?

The questions have been posed in a manner that opens up a wide range of possibilities—this is intentional as I want you to explore different points of view. However, we now need to focus on what is necessary for imagination, fantasy, creativity and play to become useful tools in addressing real problems such as social and environmental sustainability. I am referring to the type of social and environmental realities which the world is facing now.

For the exercise No2 you are asked to discuss the above aspects and any other aspects that you may find in the document. A diagram is a useful device to organise and present these ideas. As you are also investigating your own topic (see point 3 in tut introduction), use the material you have already found to compare and to make your points—use examples from other cases, from the news, etc.

What are the devices used to communicate reality, fantasy, creativity. What are the opportunities offered by the project descriptions to express the same? What are the shortcomings and what would you do next (recommendations)?

· Presentation minimum 1xA3.

Note: exercise No2 is not about graphic presentation but about content—it is the content that needs to be communicated in a legible and clear manner.
